about

Dylan Paul Ware (born 9th February, 1972) is an acid folk/folk-rock singer-songwriter and poet based in Istanbul. He has released two studio albums “Dark Wind Songs” (2004) and “Wolfsongbird” (2012) both under the independent label Water-Wheel Rhymes. Ware is notable for his softly sung poetic lyrics, naturalistic imagery, and reclusive private life, and has been compared to Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Iron and Wine’s Samuel Beam, and an early Paul Simon in various reviews and articles.

Born in Gisborne, New Zealand, the eldest of three children, to Darryl Ware, a broadcaster and writer/journalist, and Sandra Ware (nee Humphry), an early childhood educator, Ware spent his early childhood in New Zealand’s northernmost city of Whangarei, which he left at the age of 16 to “pursue a life of freedom and bohemia” later moving to Nelson, in the South Island, where he completed school. He studied Philosophy at Canterbury University, Christchurch, finishing in 1999, after which he began what was to become many years of itinerant travelling through Australia, Europe and The Far East. This period of travelling was to have a profound effect on Ware’s song-writing, and many of the songs from the era have themes of intense introspection, freedom and solitude, and appear on the acoustic album “Dark Wind Songs” (2004).

Ware eventually settled in Istanbul, Turkey, where he continues to live, rarely visiting his homeland. He released a second studio album “Wolfsongbird” (2012) in January of that year; featuring compositions more intricately textured, with multiple instruments, some orchestration, and stylistically more diverse, touching on early psychedelic folk and rock. He is currently working on a third album in Istanbul.

Track Name: Sweet Lovin' Lady (intro)
(instrumental)
Track Name: Gold
Rain is falling
And I’ve got nowhere to go
My girl’s at work
And I am stuck at home
I looked everywhere
But all I can find is time
And that is why I wrote
This little rhyme

But I know
When I’m old
It’s a day
Made of gold…

Rain is falling
And I got no place to go
Had too many coffees
And out is very cold
I don’t wanna drink
And TV’s just too dumb
I fiddled with myself
And now I suck my thumb

But I know
When I’m old
It’s a day
Made of gold…

…Gold.

Rain is falling
And I’ve got nowhere to go
My girl’s at work
And I am stuck at home
I looked everywhere
But all I can find is time
And that is why I wrote
This little rhyme.
Track Name: No Honey
Hey, hey, hey, I got no honey anymore
Hey, hey, hey, no baby naked on the floor
And I never wanted this
And I never stole a kiss
But hey, hey, hey, nobody knockin’ on my door.

Hey, hey, hey, looks like I’m goin’ it alone,
Feels like a thousand years wasted on my own
And I never meant no harm
I’m under a low-down charm
But hey, hey, hey, I need my woman who can roll…

And all my days just turn to night
And all my dreams don’t come out right…

Hey, hey, hey, you think it’s easy runnin’ free?
I wouldn’t trade it for the world if that could be
But I wanna love like fire
I wanna feel desire
But hey, hey, hey, it’s just my old guitar and me…

And all my days just turn to night
And all my dreams don’t come out right…

(instrumental)

And all my days are turned to night
And all my dreams drop out of sight…

Hey, hey, hey, I got no honey anymore
Hey, hey, hey, no naked lovely on the floor
And I never wanted this
I never stole a kiss
But hey, hey, hey, no baby knockin’ on my door.
Track Name: Matthew
Matthew messed up everything he had
So he moved into a shed beside the sea,
Living with the birds up above his head
Running like the wind so free

Singing la la la la la la la la
Oooh, la la la la la…

Matthew caught a fish in the morning sun
And he cooked it in a ring of stones
Working in the night by a lit lantern
Writing in a book of poems

Singing la la la la la la la la
Oooh, la la la la la…

(instrumental)

Matthew watched the moon rise bleeding red
And he flew into the starry sky
Leaping through the waves made his way to bed
Saying boy I hope I never die!
Track Name: Alice
Alice, peculiar queen
Eyelids deliciously green
Autumn hung in your hair
Fires dance in the air

O – I hope you don’t miss me.

Alice, you’ve got it made
Always impeccably played
Letters and lovers for you
Whiskey and symphonies too

O – I hope you don’t miss me.

Alice, seen in the street
Siamese cat at your feet
Roses wrapped round your head
Jesus, there for the dead

O – I hope you don’t miss me.
Track Name: Sweet Lovin' Lady (reprise)
(instrumental)
Track Name: Sweet Lovin' Lady
I’m gonna find a way
I’m gonna get away
Gonna be the best I can be
Gonna see all the world I can see
Gonna ride through the mountains of the free
Gonna find me a sweet lovin’ lady.

I don’t wanna hang around
Cryin’ while they tie me down
Gonna be the best I can be
Gonna see all the world I can see
Gonna climb in the mountains of the free
Gonna find me my sweet lovin’ lady…

(instrumental)

Eagles are gonna fill the sky
When I lay down to die
Gonna be the best I can be
Gonna see all the world I can see
Gonna fly in the mountains of the free
Gonna find me my sweet lovin’ lady…
A sweet lovin’ lady.
Track Name: Julia's Song
Julia, dancing in a dream of spring
Such a pretty naive thing
Sweet as the embryo's wing...

Truly I was in the days of rain
I was in the days of Cain
I was in a daze...

Julia, skipping down an arbour lane
Ever so removed from pain
Wonders if she'll change her name...

Only I was in the sunken land
Darkened to the depths of man
Fire reigning in my hand...

Julia, sleeping in the silent trees
Mud upon her little knees
Cooling in the evening breeze.
