about
Dylan Paul Ware (born 9th February, 1972) is an acid folk/folk-rock singer-songwriter and poet based in Istanbul. He has released two studio albums “Dark Wind Songs” (2004) and “Wolfsongbird” (2012) both under the independent label Water-Wheel Rhymes. Ware is notable for his softly sung poetic lyrics, naturalistic imagery, and reclusive private life, and has been compared to Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Kings of Convenience, Iron and Wine’s Samuel Beam, and an early Paul Simon in various reviews and articles.
Born in Gisborne, New Zealand, the eldest of four children, to Darryl Ware, a journalist and playwright, and Sandra Ware (nee Humphry), a teacher, Ware spent his early childhood in New Zealand’s northernmost city of Whangarei, which he left at the age of 16 to “pursue a life of freedom and bohemia” later moving to Nelson, in the South Island, where he completed school. He read Philosophy at Canterbury University, Christchurch, finishing in 1999, after which he began what was to become many years of itinerant travelling through Australia, Europe and The Far East. This period of travelling was to have a profound effect on Ware’s song-writing, and many of the songs from the era have themes of intense introspection, freedom and solitude, and appear on the acoustic album “Dark Wind Songs” (2004).
Ware eventually settled in Istanbul, Turkey, where he continues to live, rarely visiting his homeland. He has recently released his second studio album “Wolfsongbird” (2012) in collaboration with English musician and sound-engineer Luc Glaister of Pear-Shaped Productions. These latter compositions are more intricately textured, with multiple instruments, some orchestration, and stylistically more diverse, touching on early psychedelic folk and rock.
